Gastroesophageal reflux disease, known as GORD, is the most common gastrointestinal disorder of the developed world. Gallup polls indicate that approximately 25 % of the adult western population has some abnormal reflux of acidic gastric juices into the oesophagus (gullet) on a monthly basis.
